El canadenc Philip Curtis explica a Josephine McCloud, de qui està enamorat. sobre un ermità que una vegada li va salvar la vida i el va curar. Josephone roman impassible fins que Felip li diu el nom de l'ermità: Pere Déu. En esmentar el seu nom, Josephine demana a Felip que trobi Pere i li porti una carta que li havia escrit.
